My laptop's been hit by a virus?

It's one doing the rounds this weekend..pops up saying it's scanning for trojans, worms etc. Then replaces screen with blue background and red warning messages. Have followed some online suggestions (press F8 to work in safe networking mode) but I have mobile broadband and when I try to connect to the internet (to either add Kaspersky which I have on my desktop or install a freebie) there's no signal. I don't have another means of connecting to the internet, so am I going to have bite the bullet and pay someone to sort it out? Also, the experts have been saying this virus is attacking computers with McAfee on them. I also have a netbook with McAfee on it (but not current, just installed as per factory settings) and am now worried that if I try to use that, the same virus might attack and I'll be left with two non-working machines!
