Protection Light is on; on my amp?!!?

I have a 500 watt Jensen amplifier. When i hooked it up and turn the key on the red protection light comes on for a couple seconds then goes off. I did some research and people said to unhook the RCAs and speakers and try it again with just positive, negative, and REM. Same thing... What could be wrong?
