My buddy has a 1999 Pontiac firebird v6.The oil gauge drops at idle and the cars shuts off.?

Is this a engine safemode type of thing on the firebirds.But I'm leaning on the oil pump going out.If anyone with experiance with these cars could anwser thanks.
